Updates

What's new on bestes-wetter.de — chronological, newest first.

1 June 2026

  • A photo journey along the route — clicking a photo marker on a stage map now pages through all of that stage's photos in route order. A little route map below the image shows where each photo was taken along the way; the current dot glows, and clicking it jumps straight there. The map behind follows as you browse.

31 May 2026

  • Photos on the map — every stage map now shows where each photo was taken along the way: small round image markers at the exact spot. A tap opens the photo full-size — and from the big photo, one click takes you back to its place on the map.
  • The whole tour as GPX — multi-day tours can now be downloaded as a single GPX file, the entire route onto your GPS in one go. The individual stages are still available separately.
  • A shirt to match the blog — there's now a bestes-wetter.de shirt in merino wool. Find it on the Support page or via the shirt icon in the footer. We don't make a cent on it — it's about wearing it, not business.

30 May 2026

  • bestes-wetter on Instagram and Facebook — tour impressions are now on social media too: Instagram and Facebook. The links are in the footer as well.
  • A friendlier 404 page — mistype a URL or lose your way, and you now land under a bright sun over the mountains instead of a bland error page.
  • A touch more life — the sunshine on the home page now pulses ever so gently, and article cards and links respond subtly when you hover over them.

28 May 2026

  • Weather on the tours — every tour now shows the weather at its start point: a discreet "today" symbol next to the date in the listings, and a compact weather box at the top of the tour report that expands to the coming days (temperature, conditions, precipitation). Tied to the tour location, not your own — so no location prompt. Data from MET Norway (met.no).
  • Weather in Wetter — a wink at the name: /en/weather-in-wetter shows the real weather of the town Wetter on the Ruhr. A discreet live nudge also sits in the footer and softens the 404 page.
  • "Back to top" button — on long pages, a button appears in the bottom right that smoothly scrolls back to the top with one click.

Go-Live — 27 May 2026

bestes-wetter.de is officially online. What's changed since the last update besides the coming-soon splash going away:

  • Support page/en/support explains how the project is funded (affiliate links, direct support) and what explicitly does not happen here (sponsorship deals, influencer campaigns). Where a post contains no affiliate recommendations, a short friendly nudge towards this page now closes the article.
  • Privacy and imprint fully translated to English — no more language gaps on the English side.
  • Language switcher with country-flag stripes — German and English each get a subtle colour band under the label.
  • Difficulty ratings on tours — easy / moderate / hard for quick orientation in the tour header.
  • Sharper warning notes on the Cape Wrath Trail reports — no romanticising, concrete pointers on river fords, north-westerlies and reliably wet feet.
  • Two more recommendations — MSR Access 1 tent on the Cape Wrath Trail reports, and a discreet pointer to the successor Garmin inReach Mini 3 on the Mini 2 recommendations (with a note about the required Garmin subscription).
  • Behind the scenes — structured article data for search engines (Schema.org + hreflang) and preview cards for Facebook, LinkedIn and Mastodon. Invisible to readers but important for discoverability.
  • Fullscreen mode for maps — click the ⛶ icon in the top right of any tour map to view it edge-to-edge; ESC or another click closes again.
  • Better search — the search now also finds brand and product names from the recommendation cards (e.g. "Garmin", "Hanwag"). Click a result and the browser scrolls straight to the match on the target page and highlights it.
  • Recommendation cards in the tours — hiking boots, satellite communicators, airport transfers. Affiliate links are clearly marked as such.
  • Mobile layout cleaned up — maps and galleries now wrap properly on narrow displays, the reading column has more breathing room from the edge.
  • Faster loading — tour detail pages respond noticeably more quickly on first click.

May 2026

  • Multi-day tours with a stage overview at the top, colour-coded routes on a combined map, and jump-links to the individual stages.
  • Per-stage photo galleries with lightbox (click a thumbnail to open the full-size view; arrow keys to navigate).
  • First tour reports: Rome May 2026 (twelve city walks), Cape Wrath Trail (six stages through the Rough Bounds of Knoydart), Scotland camper trip, Alpine crossing Garmisch–Sterzing, and the VulkaMaar Trail in the Eifel.

April 2026

  • Project kickoff for bestes-wetter.de. First tour reports from spring, bilingual (German + English), with interactive maps and GPX downloads for every tour.
